It's just the most popular challenge type, I imagine that people like joining DTIYS because it requires less creative effort to redraw something than to create something totally new. So DTIYS get more submissions than the more original challenges.
I guess you could take the cynical route and say people make DTIYS challenges bc they just want free fanart of their OCs, but any challenge is basically telling people to draw something for you for free, so like...you can't say "people want free art" about just DTIYS.

Cause if you are a small creator with new ideas for challenges you would probably wont get anyone to participate and those big artists with dtiys would

I think moodboard challenges are also popular, although I've never participated in any (@andrewhatesham and @fagboy makes lots of them!)

And also 'cause it's easier to judge ? When you have your own drawing as reference for a challenge I feel like it's easier than judging full on creativity challenge like character design ones
Also oc challenge are fun but you can't really put a final/podium to it since in the end the created ocs will end up with their creator, not the one who launched the challenge if that makes sense
