Question to american people: I am very sorry if i sound offensive but, why do people always say americans has the most terrible geography? This is a genuine question i just want to know.
Like, for example: A friend of mine who is an american said that his friend doesn't know what is china and thinks its a state for the U.S.
Or when you said your from asia they put China,Korea and Japan as the only asia country they know. Despite they are many.
Like huh??

Because we suck at geography lmao

Anecdotally, I've taken human geography back in freshman year hs and lemme tell you, no one paid attention in that class. Unless ya really into that stuff like me.
The class mainly talks about the development of nations, nation states, states, city-states,countries, etc from stage 1 to stage 4 of developing countries. We only took 1 or 2 tests on the world map. Other than that, we didn't focus on the name or capital of countries, we mainly focus on overall system development and how it effects the human population, land, etc.
It's the same for world history, we learn how the countries became to be but not really where they are. We all know where things generally are, the types of people, and the empires trade routes, and Dynasty, just not modern stuff (unless we're talking about the World wars, or the Big 3 imperialism).
I'm not sure how anyone can get mixed with with China being a state, i can understand Georgia but China, really?

It’s pretty simple; we’re not taught geography. Or, if we are, it’s a very quick or not-complete lesson that only happened ONCE instead of repeatedly being taught it every year of school. I legitimately don’t know all of the states in the US (I’m from the US) because of this.
Back in the day, something called the “No Child Left Behind” act was put into place to make American students better at English & Math; everything else was pushed to the side. In 2015, they updated it with SOME fixes, but the education system is still horrible here & desperately needs a total rehaul. I lived through the majority of “No Child Left Behind,” would you believe that MILLIONS of children got left behind because of this act? Because that’s exactly what happened, myself included.

America has a very inward-facing perspective on history and geography (compared to my time in the UK), I've found. I'm always surprised my British friends can't list more than 10 states, but then again my European geography isn't that great either.

the second cause is religion in schools. what do people expect of a system that divides each town against eachother and traps the poor in unforgivable debt trying to get an education?

we have a VERY bad public school system that enhances rich students and keeps dumb the poor. it's systematic

Mostly we learn history, and in Geography we do learn some places but we aren't really expected to like..memorize it or anything. A lot of Geography class is based around maps and how land influences people not really countries, states etc. (Or at least in my experience, I'm taking a Geography class rn lol)

During my time in school, our history/geography courses focused on our state, the US, and Europe (plus a few others during World War lessons). Part of it is that Europe had the most direct influence on our history, beyond that there’s a lot of cultural factors and weird school standards at play (plus our own country is so dang big lol there’s a lot of geography to talk about right here)

I can see someone thinking China, Japan and Korea is all of Asia, despite there being the Middle East Russia, and other countries, it’s probably because when most people talk about Asia (at least people I’ve talked to) they usually are talking about those three countries,although idk why anyone would think China is a state.
