why do you create ocs?

is it for story purposes (comics, fanfics, etc.)? is it to 'manifest' something you feel? or you just like the design part?
idk tell me i'm curious

i think i started creating them to feel less alone

I usually create them with a specific context in mind, like if I’m making an animated short or a piece for my story portfolio. For a lot of others, especially younger artists, I feel like OCs are often like an evolution of imaginary friends? And I don’t mean that in a pejorative way, I just find it interesting since I guess I’ve always had more of a “utilitarian” approach to developing characters, relatively speaking

i started creating ocs because i wanted to tell stories!! but now its mostly to explore tropes that i think are poorly represented in media (i just want to show life through my perspective i guess)
and like u said, theyre an extension of myself! theyre all inspired off me (some more than others)

sometimes, if im too bored or i wanna try something new, i design one just because :)

I started creating characters when I was a small kid and didn’t have a lot of friends haha

now I do it for my comic or for stories I think of or just to create something out of thin air for fun! I love the design aspects, but I def think that every character I make has a lil piece of me!

Same thing as you, really.
I tend to create characters I wish I could be. Like some sassy asshole who can say what I really think and make people shut up instead of letting people step all over them…
Or just have someone who’s life is more complicated/worse than mine lol

Mostly for stories. I developed my first ocs so that I could make a story around them and recently I've made more ocs for a story so that I can make a webtoon. I also like to live through them. They can visit each other instead of me seeing my friends right now. They can be in a band and play shows while I can't cause I'm still working on the musical skill. They can be the magic kids I always wanted to be.

i created most of my ocs because i had stories i wanted to write!! but mostly they are for me to explore feelings and emotions in somebody elses point of view?? (like how personality and past experiences affects on feeling emotions)
and like i some time earlier told you, they all have some of my specific struggles in life asgjkl i guess i use ocs as a way to think about those things too

I’m working on a story (hopefully a future comic) and I’ve been creating OCs since 2014 and they became so precious to me

I also enjoy designing OCs I think it’s fun :3

I usually create ocs for story purposes, but even though they are just characters I feel like I always put a little of myself in them

My current ocs started with a self-insert

then I added a few more and loved their dynamic, so I changed the first one to be less like me. And now their purpose it for a comic I want to draw someday

Story purposes for most but some of them were created from videogames with character creators (like Monster Hunter or Final Fantasy 14) which then turned into their own characters.
