My favorite that I've ever heard was when a family member was looking at one of those famous artworks that depict a battle, and he said something like "wow! The artist must have had such a good memory to be able to paint all these people in the exact way they were during that moment in battle!" I tried to convince him that no, the artist was not present in the battle, and even if he somehow was, people irl (especially in battle!!) wouldn't just conveniently place themselves in the right way to make a good composition for a painting
Like "hey dude, the sun is shining from our left so if we stand right here and stare dramatically into the distance, it would be the perfect composition for a painting" XD. What's even funnier is that he didn't believe me no matter how many reasons I gave him
. Well, at least he appreciated some of the effort put into that painting I guess
Oh and also someone was once surprised that I use construction lines for my drawings. They thought I just put my pencil on paper and
drew. That wasn't such an unusual assumption, but I still found it amusing.
It's always really interesting to see how non-artists think art is made

•This happened last year during a small con, I was selling some art there.
A mother asked me a commission to draw her daughters, fine by me. The younger wasn’t really sure on how she wanted me to do it (like accessories or stuff, her bigger sister wanted to have a witch hat), so I told her to check my sketchbook on display to get inspired.
She looked around and saw a drawing of a topless fairy with tattoos and eating a popsicle (it was for a DTIYS, you can even see it on my page). The conversation goes like this:
Kid: I wanna be a fairy!
Me: Like this right? points drawing
Mum: What a good choice :D
Kid: worried voice But… Are you going to give me big boobs like her?
Mum: bursts into laughter
Me: trying to remain professional No sweetie don’t worry, it will be you but with her wings and antennas.
At the end everything was fine, both girls loved the commissions portraits and the mum was pretty supportive even asked me for a third for his son. No joke that woman saved me from negative numbers during that con with her generosity, she even tipped me :’D

•Some coworkers assume that just because I drew OCs in cutesy romantic scenarios, that must mean that I'm doing it cuz I myself crave to be in a cutesy romantic relationship.

That's such a weird assumption to make about someone. That's like saying "Oh, you drew an absolutely terrifying and gross monster? That must be because deep down inside, you feel like an absolutely terrifying and gross monster."
I drew a pony yesterday. Because I was feeling rather pony. And totally not because of other reasons.

•It'll always be the assumption that there's a "make it look good" button. Sadly, it kinda exists now...
(Another one is any kind of assumption about your skill level, unwillingness to believe you when you correct them, and the followed bewilderment at being wrong when you're under/overqualified for whatever it is they asked you to draw

•back in hs i drew an anime face on our chalkboard (with chalk lol) because 1 classmate asked me to draw and i obliged just cuz. it wasn't an impressive face/head but the cmate that asked was impressed. but then another cmate(#2) came to us and said that my drawing was just basic lines, basic nose, basic brows etc.
what cmate2 said amused me because, though she wasn't an artist (she wasn't the type, she wasn't in our club lol, also we don't have beef between us), she can see right through the "art" for what it is: an assemblage of lines that make an (anime) face. the experience isn't negative for me, but it darned amused me that i can still remember her name haha. made me realise that art is like magic, all illusions.

•I don't think of mine as laugh out loud funny but sometimes people hugely misunderstand the vastness of what they're suggesting compared to what I'm willing to do, to unbelievable levels.
My brother is quick to learn new skills and he envisioned that I'd be reasonably able and willing to illustrate an entire story-driven RPGmaker game in custom made pixel art graphics if he wrote the full plot to it and used the programming tools to program it, and that I could also be the person to carry him to finish this project. Sounds like an exhausting amount of hard work for someone else's passion project. I did a couple of character designs for fun.
Truth is, he was just into learning to use RPGmaker and when that enthusiasm passed he moved on to learning about the next big thing - which is perfectly alright.
My sister is a creative person, too, and she said that we should make an illustrated childrens' story book together. That's also easily tens and hundreds of hours of coordinated group work for someone else's passion project.
