This is cool! I suggest avoiding grays and blacks to shade can help. For skin you could go with a deeper red/wine color or warm purples!

really try pushing the shadows and highlights, its all kind of mid tone right now(something i struggle with too). i like to when shading skin tones increase the saturation a tad when i'm changing to a shadow color(so its more towards a red or orange tone as it goes into the shadows). the rendering on that top part of the hair actually looks really nice and i think a bit more contrast would make a drastic improvement. i also like to work on a medium grey background(usually, i change it depending on what the enviorenment colors or lighting situation might be, as surrounding colors change our perception of the figures colors). i second what someone else said about color zones on the face and considering blood flow. this might be a more personal style thing but i like starting of with a line art like this then once i've finished the basic colors and rendering i set it to a lower opacity and redraw it neatly and softly with different colors, like a really dark brown or maroon around the skin etc. makes it feel more alive(atleast for me). recent advice i got was to think about soft and sharp transitions and where to put them depending on the underlying form, the under a cheekbone might be a sharp clear shadow or the round curve of an arm might be a soft gradient of shadow etc.

skin has so many different hues other than tan and brown, i would highly recommend watching some youtube videos on it!
as for my advice though, i would probably use more pink/orange in the skin (depending on his specific undertones as a human) and blend some blue or purple in to the shadows, although those colors depend on the lighting hes in (ex: if hes under the sky at day, blue shadows- or if hes under a yellow light with no other colors to affect it, orange shadows)
