My preferences:
- romance is cool as long as it has little to no sex scenes (preferably)

The lunar chronicles is a pretty good series (though I admit it’s been a while since I’ve read it) it basically Cinderella (+ other fairytales like repunzel, little red riding hood, and Snow White) with a post apocalyptic world twist (Cinderella aka cinder is actually a cyborg and there’s like an alien colony as well) also there is also a pandemic goin on too. It’s a fun series if you like fairytales with a twist

If it has Brandon Sanderson on the cover, You Should Read It. He's got a lot of stuff, mostly fantasy. I've read most of it, and it's allll great. If you prefer YA - Skyward and the Reckoners are good starting points (I personally found Skyward a slog, but the rest of the series is WAY better). For the fantasy stuff, start with Elantris, Warbreaker or Mistborn/ The Final Empire (name depends on region). Just note that the first 3 Mistborn books are the closest he's ever written to grimdark, so has a different tone to the rest of his work. Stormlight archive is his best work, but you should not start with it.
The semi related rec - the wheel of time by Robert Jordan. 14 book series, plus one prequel novel. V. Good, and one of the biggest influences on the fantasy genre to this day. Just note the gender politics will irritate - there's a lot of "I don't understand the opposite sex, they're incomprehensible!" going on that makes you roll your eyes. But it's got some great female characters and excellent diversity, especially when it started publication in the 80s. Fantasy is still bad at some of that today.
The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon. It'll be one of the top recommendations of wlw fantasy, but it's genuinely excellent.
The Expanse series by James S. A. Corey. I haven't read the full series yet, but i love what I've read. I'll give fair warning that the first book has some pretty gross segments that I found hard to read.
Like satire/ spoof? Terry Pratchett's Discworld is the gold standard. Just read these in physical books - it doesn't translate to ebook very well. Mostly they're standalone books and can be read in any order.

Annihilation
Children of Time
Both books examine human destructiveness, but in different ways. Children of Time takes place in Space and Annihilation takes place on a strange, excluded area on earth.
Honestly, I didn't know what they were about when I started reading them. But it was a pleasant surprise, especially since I saw parts of the movie Annihilation before I read the book. The adaptation definitely took liberties.
