Sometimes I feel like I'm less skilled than other people because I don't draw in a realism/semi-realism style and I know it's not inherently true but I always am worried my art comes off like a child made it and that I am totally unskilled and bad at art just because I draw cartoony or with big eyes idk like I lowkey feel bad at drawing when I compare to people who draw more realistically but I also like my art style and don't intend to draw realistically I'm just like scared of everything I make coming out like it looks like it was made by a sixth grader . But like I do see improvement from my old art to now but like I don't know it's hard to say I feel like I'm not good at it just because I draw more cartoonyDec 14, 2025

Realism is overrated (not trying to be rude just my opinion). Yeah, it does require lots of skill but doesn't make cartoony art lesser. Besides, if you're drawing purely for yourself/your entertainment only thing that matters is if YOU like it or not

•Most great cartoonist have a deep understanding of anatomy. You can be just as skilled but choose to draw in your style. The more you improve the more your “child like style” will look just as high skill level as those realistic ones.

This might be a reach, but I'd assume you probably have a lot of issues with self worth? If thats the case than I don't think anyone can really say much that is going to change your mind, you'll always have some kind of anxiety or worry or voice in your head telling you you're lesser because [something]. Art is an incredibly vast subject that goes from depicting reality as accurately as possible, to depicting the abstract. You can fall anywhere on realism to abstract. The general audience may not appreciate less realistic things, but thats just not going to be the audience you'd want anyways. Also being good at something is incredibly vague. And theres nothing wrong with being average or just beeing good at something and not being excellent at it aslong as you're gaining a benefit from doing that thing.

•i think that drawing more cartoon-like also requires a lot of skill, i know a lot of people who say they struggle to draw more like that and while i do love both ends of the art style spectrum, i think that your art style specifically holds so much uniqueness to it, it really is a great skill not many people have

•I think people who think art that’s more cartoonish or less realistic don’t understand how to enjoy art in all of it’s beautiful forms. Shows like Phineas and Ferb, the justice league animated series, or Scooby Doo all have very cartoonish and unrealistic styles but they’re all beloved shows made by talented people. I think there’s an elitism that’s been happening where people are only valuing hyper realistic art and that might be contributing to what you’re feeling. Personally as someone who draws more realism I definitely don’t assume people are children because they’re art isnt realist. I love all kinds of different art styles and think things that are more abstract or exaggerated do take a lot to skill and work to create!

•if it helps, i think your art looks very well developed and purposeful! i know some people might make the association that cartoony and less realistic styles are bad but i really like your art and it definitely doesnt come across like it was drawn by a 6th grader to me, i can tell its choices made by an experienced artist!!
