How do people come up with names for fantasy stuff??

Don't get me wrong, I have always sucked at naming things, it's a thing with me, but how the heck do people come up with fantasy names for cities or races, etc. I'm mostly talking when it comes to RPG type of stuff.

People are so creative with this stuff, and here I am with my bird people being called Aves which apparently is just a latin word for birds.

When it comes to naming cities, villages, kingdoms, etc. I usually look at random letters, like on a keyboard or a car plate and try to mix them together or add extra letters to make a somewhat nice sounding name

Last time, I was looking around on my way home from work and saw a car with a "DST" on it's plate. So I started putting extra letters to it, until I got a word. "DYSTA" Which became the capital kingdom's name in one of my stories

At work, while I had a little free time, I was looking at my keyboard and tried to combine the letters until they stick. I got ASDERTUL, WERTUNDEL, SYXOPHAL, QADNEIR, KYAHTREL, and many more names for places in my fantasy stories
Conlanging! At least for the non-english names
I consider the look and mouthfeel of the name if you get what I mean.

researching words and names in other languages is already a good start.

Next you’re gonna wanna analyze how each language sounds and how they spell the names.

Special characters can help if you really want stronger foreign vibes.
The !Kung bushmen use tongue clicks in their language (denoted by a “!”). Some European languages have spicy vowels (stuff like â ä å) that affect pronunciation.

At least that’s what I do when I name my PC for D&D games.
I just steal words from other languages, do a bit of some Mish Mash and maybe add like two extra letters lol 💀
Name generator
There's a tonne of them.
Keyboard smash and then see if the pattern recognition part of your brain makes names from some of the combinations~

Eechk be up p it rw so he ukk gf rd
-> up p it rw -> Riwit Uppin
-> so he ukk gf rd -> Sohed Gufred
Kinda like that, just mangle and mush that stuff. Though if you plan to use names like that in a commercial way you probably should run them through a google search and some translators just to make sure you aren't accidentally insulting someone ^-^“
I mix words that fit the meaning together randomly, often from different languages.
Smash words together till it sounds appropriate and cool :)
Latin. 😎
