Hello artfolans~end of the month question for you digital artists

Do you keep your sketch after finishing the line art or delete it? On the same note do you merge all your layers after you’ve finished drawing (do you draw with multiple layers)?

Personally I’m rly paranoid about flattening my layers so if I have too, I make a copy of the canvas and flatten the duplicate. And I always keep the sketch cause you never know, could be useful one day lol.Jan 31, 2024

. It's just like you say, we never know. Sometimes I reuse layer on another drawing

Sometimes I duplicate the layer, for caution or just because I liked how it looked and I want to keep it.

Depends on how uogly it is lmao also I don’t merge all of my layers when I finished it because god for bid I get a new art style during my process and it would be gone.

Sketch layer is of zero use to me, so bye bye, but merging everything is pointless and makes things unnecessarily difficult if something needs to be touched.

I never flatten anything, if I want a flat image I'll just export it accordingly

I’ve never deleted the sketch layer as far as I can remember, and generally I don’t flatten the layers (usually if I do it’s because there are way too many and I will make a copy of the file). I also keep all of my original files and have some from 5+ years ago, though I probably don’t need most of them anymore and probably should go delete at least some of them now lol

I keep the sketch, I just need it to be extra sure for no reason. As well as any layers. I'd have multiple versions of the same thing on different layers but only use one. I feel safer with all the progress still w me. And then at the end I will have hundreds of layers, guess that's what's filling my storage!

never. Always have the copy of the sketch. At some point if I go back to yhe art I'd like to see what it looked like before the rendering

I keep the sketch and don’t flatten. It’s fun looking back at how I used to do things so I think it’s worth it even though it takes more space :)

I literally duplicate my whole drawing without merging layers, deleting layers, nothing. I’m also hella paranoid.

i delete the sketches. I just find it a hassle to keep them, and if the entire art-piece is deleted, then im just like "eh" bc i can always make more.

I typically don't save sketches, I prefer erase the sketch and use that layer for something else. I don't merge all of my layers, but I merge most of them just to declutter.

Once I finish a drawing, I don't save them simply because my device is slowly running out of storage. At most, I take a screenshot of all my progress, anyways I don't use many layers when drawing, tops 7, but it's usually just 3, Maybe once I get a better device I'll simply save it in the program, I use krita

Folder, EVERYTHING.
Sketches and cleaner sketches? Folder.
Colors and shading? Straight to another, different folder- line art is just there, folder less, lol

i actually don't do line art, but i mostly start with sketches and some base colorings :DD

I keep mine. Merging never made any sense to me as deleting the file has the same effect. A merged file has no use to me.
I also put my layers in a folder dedicated to it; Sketch, Lineart, Colour. Sketch folder is always on low opacity and locked, and then "hidden" during the colour stage.

I keep my sketches due to preservation and evidence. A lot of groups I join require layer evidence.
I do have timelapses, but they are never output and uploaded... It takes more time to do that.

I just save it via folders!! So I never actually flatten stuff. What program do you use? Id recommend keeping all your layers if you can, even if it’s just in collapsed folders that are toggled off

You really shouldn't be flattening all your layers in your work file. Your flat file will be the .png file that you post online

Sometimes I keep it, and sometimes I dont tho I dont rlly wanna delete my sketch layers but I dont want my drawings to take up too much mb
And I do merge some layers afterwards but not all

I keep my sketch layers :D This actually made me think about why I do that though haha - I think I like seeing my messier lines get cleaned up in the lineart stage
I do merge my lineart layers though since I like having closed lines hehe

I'll always keep my sketch no matter what!

I delete the sketch and merge the layers as I finish certain sections - if I don't I'd end up colouring on the wrong layer 24/7

I keep the sketch, just in case I need to use it again for whatever reason. And it's also nice to see a before + after.

I only merge the lineart layers because by the time I start colouring, I'll rarely, if ever, need to go back to it. All of my colour layers get put into a folder as I'm working with them. It's more convenient that way.

I keep it, and I keep my layers unmerged too! Sometimes I really wanna change something after I'm already "done" with the drawing so then it really comes in handy that I dont merge them all. I do merge some of them because the sheer amount of layers I have is ridiculous, but I keep many things un-merged, especially when I'm not 100% sure about the colour choice or other aspect of a certain part
