Imma attach what I wrote last night here, and ngl i don’t know if it’s really finished but I hope you enjoy—
Denis looked over Sasha’s face, dappled with freckles over the bridge of his nose and his cheeks. They were all perfect spots of brown.
And Denis would never say it to Sasha’s face, but he’d counted them before when he couldn’t sleep. When Sasha would rest on his side, and Denis could tally them up. He usually fell asleep by the time he’d reached a hundred.
Then he would rest, his hand clasped gently in Sasha’s, feeling the gap in entwined fingers where Denis was missing one. The left ring finger.
Sasha hadn’t been there when his finger had gotten caught under the wheel, but he’d been there to watch him bleed. From the tree line, he’d murmured, “I said this was a bad idea,” and Denis, bloody and battered up, had replied, “I’m sorry.”
Sasha had taken him to the hospital, where they wrapped the wound up in gauze. A year ago now, and Denis still hopped trains, to Sasha’s dismay. To Sasha, Denis may have been and may be a feral animal.
There were the things that grounded Denis, nonetheless; sitting on his roof with Sasha, sleeping next to him and holding him near, making mischief by his side. Merely watching Sasha each day did so much for him.
Before Denis lost his finger, his earliest memory in a hospital, waking up surrounded by people he couldn’t so easily recognize. He’d hit his head, he couldn’t remember much. The crowd left soon, and so many of the people who’d said they were his friends seemed disappointed. Yet, Sasha had stayed behind.
He sat on the empty hospital bed next to Denis’, and he’d asked, “What do you remember about me?”
“Your name starts with an S,” Denis said, and then a beat later, he added, “It’s a girl’s name.”
And Sasha had laughed. He reintroduced himself, and then he’d asked, “Do you want to know what we were, or do you want to figure it out yourself?”
Denis had chosen to figure it out himself. Sasha never talked about what happened before, what Denis couldn’t remember, what he’d been like. He let this be something new, because really, Denis hadn’t known him at that point anymore. They’d supposedly gotten along once, and now they were doing it all over again. It was unfair that Sasha had the advantage of knowing Denis at his core, but he made it a fair playing ground.
Denis still didn’t have any memories he had unearth from before. Even with others, he’d have to restart the relationships with them. Some of them didn’t have the patience for that. All he could offer was a vague guess at their names and a hint of something he’d thought of them subconsciously, without truly knowing them but as if he could guess accurately.May 28, 2021
