“You’ve no idea just how much of a loaded question that really is do you Kings?” Sighing Xander turned his attention to his stockings, a slight frown tugging at his lips. It wasn’t that he didn’t feel comfortable talking about such things with him, it was just the surprise of the topic being brought up. He had no intentions of hiding this from his boyfriend, he simply wished he would have had some warning or time to prepare.
“You know I’d never want to pressure you love, I was merely curious and you know that will hardly kill me.” Xander rolled his eyes at his boyfriend's attempt at a joke and looked back at his face. Giving him a soft smile he reached for his hand and gave it a squeeze, taking comfort in knowing that Kingsley would accept whatever decision he made.
“I’m more than aware of that Kings. I don’t mind telling you about my stockings, it just brings up some painful memories I’d much rather leave in the past where they belong,” reaching with his free hand Xander moved the hem of his tunic to better display his stockings. Taking a centring breath he began, “What you’ve first got to know is the Number One Rule of angel dress code is that one should never wear black as it is the devils colour and wearing it is to invite yourself to become fallen. So, naturally, the very first development to my stockings beyond their final shape was to start colouring black.” He gave a dry laugh and shook his head, running his fingers over the area for emphasis. “Can you imagine their shock? The rumours that started to circulate about me? I mean, my hooves being mainly black was bad enough but if my legs were black too? It would have been such a scandal,” shifting so that he was leaning into Kingsley’s side, “On the topic did I ever tell you about those stupid little hoof covers they made me wear, ridiculous things designed to cover up the ‘taint’ that came from only being half-angel allegedly.”
“That sounds moronic even compared to what other things you’ve told me about that portion of your life,” a scowl evident on Kingsley’s face which fades into a cheeky look “did they at least have little bells on them? Since you’re so quiet when you walk, even for me, I imagine they’d need them so you couldn’t sneak up so easily.” Xander gave him a playful nudge and a soft smack to his leg.
“Thankfully no, it seems they had at least a modicum of common sense in that regard,” shifting to get more comfortable when Kingsley wrapped an arm around his waist “back to the topic at hand though, or I suppose at leg? There was quite the relief when the first signs of other colours came in naturally. That is one of the reasons that I do have that fondness for the hues of my stained-glass pattern, it helped quell some of the highly obnoxious chatter going around.” Xander glanced back towards his boyfriend's face, searching for his reaction. Seeing that Kingsley wasn’t overly disturbed by the news he went on, “The other thing that helps that it’s the colours of a setting sun, which always reminds me of what was my favourite time to be around the complex. Once the sun had set a majority of the other angels had gone to bed or were working on other tasks at least, meaning that I got to be alone and have my peace. Of course, nowadays it also serves as a reminder to how I met you, the love of my life, which certainly is quite the bonus if I do say so myself.” Kingsley playfully nuzzled his face and gave him a peck on the cheek, clearly very happy to hear any connection held between them. Taking the opportunity Xander grabbed and sipped his drink, the tea helping him relax further.
“There honestly isn’t too much more to say regarding that leg; I do like how the topper looks, especially the lace. I used to be far more torn on which stocking I preferred but ever since meeting you my decision has been so much easier to make after all, how couldn’t I love something that reminds me of you?” The echo of a frown formed on his face, “Of course since the other leg has such a mixed bag of feelings I suppose there isn’t much competition really. I do enjoy the marble pattern and I think that the majority of the topper is quite lovely however some of my past with the laurel section still leave somewhat of a sour taste in my mouth. Initially, I was enamoured by it for reasons I’m sure you can guess. It was a physically tangible yet nigh-irremovable connection to my past, a link to the wreath that is the only gift from my mother to survive.” He snuggled closer to Kingsley, “you know how reluctant I used to be to wear that thing or really take it anywhere, so afraid it would be damaged or lost. With my stocking however I felt more at ease regarding it because even if the worst happened I would still have something, it might not be anything she had ever physically held but it would still connect me to her in some way. This was until more whispers started up, those trying to claim that it represented a perceived arrogance or superiority to the others. To them it made me seem like I thought I was above my station, though I’m still not sure exactly how they would have gotten that no matter what laurel wreaths may represent.”
Kingsley seemed to be deep in thought upon hearing this revelation, brows furrowed and a fang poking out. Once he had a moment he spoke, “Would you like to hear my opinions on what it might mean love? Naturally, I may be wrong but I’d still like to put my hat into the ring.” Xander gave Kingsley a small smile and he nodded, “Knowing what I do of you my love, the passion you had for being a guardian angel and keeping those under your duty as safe as your restrictions allowed, I must conclude it is related to that. To the fact that you were so dedicated to helping others triumph over despair and pain, to the victor you would help your charges achieve in their lives when other factors would want to keep them down.”
Xander couldn’t help but blush, hiding his face and his few tears in his boyfriend's neck. Kingsley held him soothingly and waited for him to feel more collected before taking his face and giving him a chaste kiss. Xander’s voice was faintly shaky when he spoke again, “thank you Kings. I’m not sure if you know how much what you said means to me but I’m fairly certain you’ve got an idea. Now may be a good time to move onto less heavy topics though, there’s only so much unexpected emotional upheaval and overly charming boyfriends I can take at once. I’d be more than happy to revisit the topic with you at a later time but for now, I’d rather a more pleasant discussion be had, perhaps you could tell me some more stories about yourself?"
