Question about OCs, I’ve been wondering about this forever and I just haven’t come to an answer. Say you reimagine a character from a fairy tale or mythology, you give them their own unique history and personality (granted inspired by original lore) but they’re basically that character except your take on them. What do you call this?
I mean it’s still technically your oc right? But it feels weird calling it that and fanart is even worse because writing that makes people assume it’s someone else’s intellectual property. I’m kind of stumped.

I would definitely say it's an OC!
Many characters from books are heavily inspired by myths or fairytales, also just take supernatural or good omens, they have crowley, but they both gave him their own twist, additional background, that is definitely not stated in the original christian religion - and both crowleys are definitely OCs.

It’s definitely an oc! Also like... RWBY is a thing that exists and pretty much every character there is based on a fairy tale

It's your oc. IIRC the style of the colossus in Shadow of the Colossus is inspired by Chinese bronze age masks. There's also the Berserk manga which is heavily inspired by fairytales and folklore. Plenty of artists take inspiration from other stories, cultures, etc, and give it a twist or a different take.

•It's an OC, my main OC is a magic cat based off of Siamese cats which in Siam lore have magical abilities such as locating lost items, protecting souls and such
