Inside Outside (Alien Bees)
My AP Fine Arts Midterm from the end of 2020.Description from that year:
This painting, made with Windsor & Newton Gouache on canvas, originated from a simple prompt. Inside and Outside. The single requirement for this piece was to include the inside and outside of an object to illustrate. Being encouraged to get as abstract with the subject matter as possible, I began writing down the first words that came to mind. I had been wanting to study crystals and their texture for the past few months and saw my opportunity. You can see the inside and the outside of a geode, right?
The concept evolved rather quickly, the words turning into multiple thumbnail ideas, eventually making my final decision on the one that had a massive bee on the top left-hand corner. The vision for the final piece unfolded in my head, churning out a detailed sketch followed by importing it into Photoshop. There, I created a simple color thumbnail beneath the sketch layer in order to sufficiently plan out my ideas for this alien piece. With all this preparation in place, I began painting. After two months of wrestling with the unusual behavior of gouache paint, and multiple pieces of cat hair getting stuck in the paint, I gazed upon the final product. One of the most elaborate projects I’ve ever painted. It rejuvenated me with a feeling of accomplishment and wonder; I made this! What can I make next?Jun 4, 2024
