People with siblings! How can I write characters with siblings and make their interactions realistic? (I’m an only child with no cousins up until like 3 months ago)Mar 22, 2024

I'd like to share that there is absolutely no wrong way to write siblings.
My experience with my siblings is not the stereotypical kind. If you make all your siblings on good terms and almost never get them pissed off at each other, that's not unrealistic, and I can vouch for that.
We essentially never fight. We're all like besties, despite the age differences. We're there for each other and are way supportive.
IF there is conflict, we don't show it. We just keep to ourselves.

•Siblings annoy the hell out of each other. But we will also do/say crazy things if someone else is mean to them. "Don't bully my sister. That's MY job" -me
Big siblings can be more protective/mature depending on age gap. Younger siblings might look up to or resent the older one...or a weird mix of both. Mob Psycho 100 does this really well, actually. It's also kind of relatable for me because I feel like my younger sister both admires and resents/envies me for different reasons. Might be one reason I love that show so much.

Well the trope of sibling getting on each other’s nerves and just being intentional mean to each other is a real thing that happens I wish I got to see more of me and my brothers relationship. Because we do annoy each other and occasionally drive the other one crazy for the most part we’re pretty chill with each other. We fought some as kids but as teens, we have each others backs and love each other.

I have a younger brother. We fight a lot but we love each other very much. He always tells me I can come to him about my problems (and he is the best brother I could ask for since he lets me complain about my womanly problems). I think you could make it realistic by doing bickering and teasing but also being playful and loving to each other. (Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Me and my ADHD brain started thinking about a whole nother topic while trying to write this.)

•Oh good question. I second all of the above. Brothers get on girls' nerves when they want their peace, the older sibling is the protector, like the 'parent' when parents are not at home and disciplines the younger siblings, the middle child is usually forgotten and ignored by the parents. Also sisters fight A LOT about clothes. We would borrow clothes without asking and when the sister found out there would be a fight
And one last thing that comes to my mind is when siblings are younger they ask for paybacks to favours they do, like if someone does a favour to the other, they'll also want a favour back, but as they grow up and mature this doesn't happen

•I'm a younger sister to an older brother. When we were young we fought allll the time. Being kind of a dick to each other is like a requirement for siblings lmao. He'd chase me around and torment me for fun, and in return if he so much as slightly slapped my arm I'd cry to our mom that he punched me. Younger siblings definitely play victim a lot because we're the babies.
We also played a lot together too though. I think the best part about having a younger sibling for him was dragging me into all of his interests. I was just happy to be involved. I always wanted to play with him, no matter what it was. So he'd teach me how to play with bakugans (I never understood it), we'd play a ton of video games together, he introduced me to minecraft, and also one of my biggest interests, Pokémon. That still connects us to this day. When we were little we watched the anime together, he gave me some of his figurines, later we both had our own nintendos and always got one of each game...
When we became older we grew apart a little, both teenagers who were always doing their own thing in their own rooms. Sometimes I only saw him whenever we ate breakfast and dinner together as a family and half our communication consisted of making weird faces whenever we saw each other lmao. I never wanted to disturb him when he was in his room because he was mostly playing games online with friends, but sometimes he'd come into my room and ask if I wanted to play Mario Kart or Pokémon and I never declined.
We became closer again after the teenage years ended. I'm 20 now, he's 23. He moved out last year but he and his family visit every 2-4 weeks. Now we send each other funny cat videos or borzoi memes all the time.

•I'm an older sister and my brother gets on my nerves all the time. He just likes to barge into my room and tell me something random then leave.
But even if we fight we'd much rather take each other's side in conflicts than someone else's (like with our parents, though it depends on the reason)
Also the taller one makes fun of the shorter one for being short
And there can be comparisons between them, especially if they go/went to the same school teachers will ask about the older sibling (though, from what my bro says, it's not very
often)
Also random memories like "hey remember that time we got a family friend to play minecraft with us and all we did was fill his inventory with ladders?" "Yeah. Good times" "yeah we should do that again" (true story)
Hope it helped!

•As an oldest out of 3 siblings.
The oldest is always cleaning up after the younger kids. Siblings will always fight for the right to sit in the best seat in the house or over dessert or snacks. And every typical teen movie involving siblings is true. ( most of the time )
And siblings will rat each other out if there is a chance or black mail.
And yes, the oldest sibling will bully the younger ones because we are the strongest, and we will get the right to pick out the movie that everyone in the household will watch. Lol
Hope this helps
