No ma'am, no sir, who is in charge of writing and developing the characters of Aggretsuko? Cuz they need to stop
I could rant about a coupla things, but I'll just keep it to one of the more glaring moments. This isn't gonna be a five page thesis or whatever, I just wanna vent to other fans of the show. If you don't know/don't care, then feel free to move along; don't worry about the grownup yelling about cartoon characters
SPOILERS AHEAD, ESPECIALLY FOR SEASON 4
I love Haida, I really do. I always have. He's always been my most favorite character in the show and is very easily within my top 5 all-time favorite characters, period. I know the show centers more around Retsuko, and she's nice, but I watch the show to see how Haida develops. And it was fun to see him interact and develop as a character! His personality? Wonderful. I'm a sucker for nervous characters that are still strong and there for their friends regardless of the situation. His love of punk music and his ability to play bass? Hot. I love alt characters/ characters who enjoy bits of alt culture (don't ask me anything about punk music tho, I couldn't personally tell you anything myself). His knowing a bit about boxing?
.....also kinda hot
Look, the point is, I'm a simp for Haida. The moment that really and truly cemented that for me tho was in Season 1 after Retsuko starts dating Resasuke before Haida can get to her. And yea, he's upset. The chick that he's been pining for for five years starts going sweet on somebody else; naturally, that hurts. Anyone would feel a lil dejected. HOWEVER, what I liked was that he acknowledged that he took too long and that it's nobody's fault but his own for not asking her out when he had the chance. And frankly, that was SUCH a breath of fresh air! That was the moment he became my fave, and everything after that was a bonus. Sure, he drank to deal with the sadness and got himself sick from being out in the rain for too long, but he didn't pass down that blame to Retsuko. None of that, "grrr, nice guys finish last, we were meant to be together" type crap. He also acknowledges at the end of Season 1 that he was more into the IDEA of Retsuko rather than liking her for her and as a result wanted to get to know her more. Ok, cool, that's my #1 right there. As the show went on, that sentiment seemed pretty consistent. Sure, she never dated the guy, but he never put the blame on her or felt as tho he were entitled to her. That lack of entitlement? Chef's kiss.
Now, he wasn't perfect. Season 3 got on my nerves (love traingles suck). I understood WHY he behaved and said what he did, but felt as tho it couldv'e potentially been handled a bit differently? But y'know, ten episodes each season and that whole Status Quo is God trope. Whatever. And I'm not here to complain about Season 3 (but I could); I'm here to complain about Season 4.
When I saw the trailer for Season 4, I was ELATED considering that it seemed to lean heavily towards Haida. A Season for the King! How enchanting! After such an excruciating wait he FIANLLY manages to "cross that threshold" with Retsuko. They hang out and go on lil dates and it's cute and wholesome and FIANLLY, man! Dang! I could complain about how heavy-handed everyone was about it, but I won't.
Y'know what, lemme stop beating around the bush and just spit it out already:
I GET that the lil arm-wrestling scene with Tadano was supposed to be some sorta foreshadowing to the final showdown with Himuro, but did dude really have to be all like, "If I wIn, YoU cAn't TaLk To ReTsUkO aNyMoRe." Shoot, the moment Haida even challenged Tadano to the challenge, I paused, nay, I FROZE and stared. Cuz with everything else that was going on, I had a baaaad feeling on where things would head. And I was right!
How do you take this magnificent, nervous king and turn him from, "bummer that we're not dating, but I acknowledge that she's her own person who can date who she wants and I should've tried asking her out and getting to know her better as a person" to "if we win this one game of strength and leverage, you're not allowed to talk to my giwlfwiend no more, abloobloobloo!" Who tf is trying to dethrone my king, and WHY did it have to involve devolving his character like that? That was so pathetically outta character that I sat till the end of the episode in mild annoyance. Trying to besmirch Haida's name, and for what? Some tension? Some drama? There was already plenty of that without having him go "ooga booga, pretty lady mine >:("
Don't get my wrong, I still love Haida and am wondering if there's gonna be another season, but I can also be disappointed in where his development (more like devolvment) went and expect better from him. Please, stop screwing up my boy, Netflix, cut a pumpkin some slack!Jan 7, 2022

Feel you. I loved Aggretsuko up to season 3 but season for was a little alien, childish, and out of touch compared to the down-to-earth nature of the previous seasons, which was what made this show interesting to begin with.
I thought my opinion on the season couldn't get any lower when Kabae and Aggretsuko James Bonded their way into the building's airways wearing that whatever thing that looks like it came out straight from an 80's movie about dancers
but then I saw the ending, and 
almost dropped it entirely if it wasn't for the promise of more Tadano screen time (can't help it, I like the guy, and for one I'm bitter that Tadano and Retsuko's relationship ended over selfishness. Sing about love but none of them considered meeting halfway through so they could be together and neither would have had to give up their vision of their future together).
All in all, all characters were dumbed down caricatures of themselves but Haida is the one who had the worst end of the deal to the point it was frustrating. I can get past that it took them 3 seasons to get together and the relationship is very stunted, inf fact, I love it that they didn't do the "happily ever after with no whatsoever problems bc they were meant for each other a along" but... their relationship was just so bland. It didn't really help that all the other characters around Retsuko tried to control their relationship, like... mind your business y'all???
I hope the next season brings the show back to its former glory.
