I’m an American, & Travis is (trr-ah-vv-iss) & Trevor is (trr-eh-vv-err)! They’re different names pronounced differently. Pronouncing Travis as “Trevor” isn’t a thing.
Either your mom is remembering incorrectly, or that kid was making stuff up, possibly because he liked “Trevor” better.

I’m from America. Travis is Travis (trA-vIs) and Trevor is Trevor (tre-vOr). Travis has a short a sound and Trevor is short e with a long o.
