Start with the lighting. A single candle, a basement light on a chain, street lamp, a cell phone and nothing else. That's how I'd tackle it.

Here are my idea:
- paint the background with blueish-black, add some bright red (like those from police cars) on the bottom right corner as light source, change the lighting on the body to red.
- If you want to keep the original orangey-yellow light source: dark brown back ground, a hint of orange on right and add some ember sparks.
