How do you get yourself to study values? (from someone who loves using color)
I really need to understand values more, but i can't find any way to enjoy the study process cuz it's all in grayscale tvt

•It /might/ be more enjoyable to understand values better if you do something like "try redrawing this picture with only 3 values" or 2 or 4 etc. Framed Ink helped me understand values better by simplifying them. I agree with @supportivesins too, Andrew Loomis is a great source. I mostly use 2 methods to color: Alea_ner mentioned one- I go straight to color and keep a 0% saturation layer over everything that I can toggle on and off to check my values as I go. The other method I use is grayscaling, then selecting areas and colorizing using hue/saturation window, then painting over that to adjust colors/lights/darks manually. But even with that 2nd method, I keep the 0% sat layer over everything to check every once in a while.

First of all as @alea_ner said you do not have to use greyscale specifically.
You can just paint in monochrome instead of greyscale sometimes.
I would really recommend checking out Andrew loomis’ creative illustration as it gives great info and exercises about value in composition. You can also look at exsisting images/movie screenshots/ etc that you enjoy seeing and break down their values so you get a little “library” of value compositions that you can reference from
Also if you mean digital art, people use greyscale and then use “color” blending option/bucket fill from what I know

For me what happens is that I take a reference that I really really wanna draw cause when I like something I make compromises for it (that is study it cause I want to be satisfied with the end result).
And then I basically try to get the closest values with the mindset that ‘perfection is a flawed concept’.

•I've seen someone use several layer modes to add color to add grayscale and that's how I thought it works

•You don't need to use grayscale since not all colors with the same saturation have the same values. You can just paint in color and use a filter to turn it into grey scale and see the values and how they contrast, or do what traditional artists do and squint.
