It has it's uses, though also has the easy pitfall of not thinking about the overall lighting situation and the possibility of the piece looking segmented.
Can also make the piece more confusing to read, since no specific light source was picked and just shaded going off of the edge of drawn elements.
In the end it come down to stylistic choice I think. Though being able to do shading with a light source in addition to it should help a lot with identifying if things look off and how to adjust them if needed
