“I wanted to learn more about how lighting affects colors/shadows in this piece but frustratingly, I think I ended up just copying colors from the reference.

Anyone else find themselves doing that when they try to learn from a photo?

Like, instead of trying to understand how the form and light is developed/built, your brain just zones out and copies the surface-level image instead?

To really push myself, I’ll have to stop using photo references, let myself make those initial, structural mistakes, and correct them from there.

But I know that that just means I’ll be making “worse” finished products than I am now, which is scary.

but hey, gotta trust the process...

I miss back when my art was so bad that no matter what I drew I would end up improving anyhow. But at some point along the way, I think that I developed “bad” habits and now I have to go backwards to fix them.

^ my old caption from a few months ago. Now I think I’m WAY better at engaged learning while drawing and getting more comfortable with drawing from memory. Still tons of room for improvement but it feels good
