Apparently I don’t live in Narnia, so I’m having an existential crisis

✨Artfol's art tutorials✨

I've noticed the critique section has lots of recurring questions, and thought it would be nice if their was an organized area where artists could post tutorials of their art process for people looking to expand their art knowledge or stretch their creativity. Basically this is a "challenge" where you can post tutorials and artists can find tutorials such as lighting, bg, shading, anatomy, etc. I really think this could help artists and would be great way to share the creative process and find new ways to do art. I already have some ideas for tutorials that I'll post here and there should be my lighting process already if you'd like to check it out. If you think this is a good idea, or something that artists could benefit from, please consider sharing. This challenge will only work if this community contributes to it:) Cheers, Ev

bg tutorial

A tutorial that was highly requested was a bg tutorial so here's a tutorial for a blurred movie-esque stylized bg.
A quick disclaimer for this, if this seems like a vague tutorial, it's because I'm trying to show you how to do bgs in general, not just this one. I'm not the best at bgs either, which is why I blur it all my mistakes away:)

The text will probably get blurred so here's a more in depth explanation:

1. Inspo! I used one picture for the reference and a second picture the color palette. You can use multiple refs ofc

2. Separate your sky from the ground, I add a gradient to the sky to add dimension

3. Block out where you want your main buildings

4. Find your perspective point and add random colors on the building do add more dimension later, I used a round brush for all of the bg

5. Add any details from the ref, this one had lots of ladders and grates

6. Merge everything into one layer (I duplicate each layer before merging in case I want to change stuff later)

7. Add more effects if you're unhappy with the colors, I added a color layer to bring the colors together and a multiply layer where I added darker color on the edges to draw your eye to the centre

8. Add lighting sources, I added mine from the middle, although after I finished this tutorial I moved it down to the perspective point so it could be coming from a car, which makes more sense than a hovering light

9. Add your character, to make them look a part of the bg, merge all the layer and clip a multiply layer and add color from the bg onto them, I added a slight gradient for mine to add more dimension

10. Add lighting to your character from the light source, the light for mine is coming from behind so I outlined her in light, check my lighting tutorial for a more in depth explanation

11. Add more overlays, multiplies, etc. Until you're happy with the vibes:)
