I have on story I been working on for over a decade now and honestly I don't know what about it made me stick with it for so long? I've had many ideas for other stories that have come and gone over the years alongside this main one.
I guess it's because of how much development gets put into it? The more details and such you give to the characters and story, the more it feels fleshed out? Like it actually feels like it could be a genuinely good story to you?
I've done so much retweaking on my story that now it's gotte to a point I really like it and I'm happy with it.

Honestly for me it’s the need to get a story out there and even then I don’t have anything completed as of yet, but I am working on it.
My best advice is to really get to know your characters, and I mean reaLly get to know them- like in an obsessive way almost haha. For me half of what I create in my head of sketches of and all that good stuff is just my need to show my character’s story and get other people to give a shit too lol the story will develop as time goes on. Giving yourself time can sometimes be the best thing you can do.
Losing motivation is completely natural, and it doesn’t mean the project is completely dead or that it’s a bad idea, it just means you might need a break, or need to tweak some stuff so you fall even more in love with it again.

I had trouble with this for the longest time until I finally found my story. When I was 12, I came up with this really lame story. But I for some reason kept going back to it time and time again. First draft sucked. Second draft was barely started. Third draft was only ever thought about. And here I am, 4 years later, working on my 4th draft after giving up several times and deciding I'd try to make a different story instead. Turns out, I guess this very specific story drew me in. I would keep losing my passion for it, but a few months later I'd pick it back up with a slightly different approach until eventually.. I love it.
It takes so much patience, so much trial and error, and you may give up several times, just as I have. But even so, if it's something you really love, you'll figure it out eventually. I thought I never would. So if I can, you can too :) Good luck !!

I've also had alot of trouble with this. I'd say take breaks from it sometimes so you dont end up hating it. like draw fanart or just draw random characters or something else than your style then come back to it when you have thoughts for it again. idk how ti explain it but I've taken many breaks from my current story and its helped me to not nuke it

•I think for me, it would be to have a story that hits close to your heart, experiences, and emotions- with something you want to say but know you can't do so on your own

•As a writer with literally no completed WIPs I tell you, the only work I am motivated to finish is my current one and its my Instagram followers' support that's keeping me going
But listen, it's totally fine to hate your work for a while and abandon it. I left my current WIP for over year before I started working on it again, and that's totally fine!
The main reason we lose motivation is the lack of inspiration actually. When we have the beginning and the end but don't know how to connect them for example. In such situations I usually lock my bedroom door and act out the story, it helps me keep it realistic and understand my characters and flow of events more which in turn allows me to think of the next step. Go one at a time even if you don't know what your characters will be doing next, you'll figure that out later
Just don't be stubborn, like "no my character HAS to go meet that person but I can't seem to find a reason for them to meet" then delete that whole scene altogether, because even if you figure something out it'll probably sound rushed and forced and only put stress on you
Let the story proceed in a way you weren't expecting, that's okay. Ask all writers out there, I don't think any one of them have the first draft anything similar to the final work
