My First Portrait -- Doc Frye, circa 1920
If you draw portraits, how to you identify the features that make the drawing look like your subject? I know that's pretty vague, but, well, any advice would be great.This poor lumpy boy with the broken nose was my first attempt at drawing a portrait that was actually supposed to look like a specific person. I'd like to introduce you to my grandfather. (I'd like to, but I can't because this really doesn't look anything like him.)
What I DO like about this drawing is how the blending and shading turned out. That may be largely because I went over every inch of this drawing so many times, but I am happy with the end result of the lighting's effect on the surfaces. For the most part, I'm quite pleased with everything in this drawing except for the head & face. My grandfather's very poofy pants look better than they did in the blurry faded reference photo.
So for better or for worse, here's Doc Frye, circa 1920. I never got to meet you. And I'm so very sorry for what I've done to your face! If you had the same sense of humor as your children, you'd probably get a kick out of this.
