I was talking to a co-worker today about how I was scrolling social media this morning trying to wake up, and I came across an otherwise innocuous phrase that slapped me in the face like I was Chris Rock. The phrase was "Back in the '90s..." Are we really far enough removed from the 1990's that we can start saying "Back in the 90's" like it's a distant era? The answer of course is yes, but my mind doesn't want to believe that. I was an adult for most of the 90's. I graduated high school in the early 90's, tried my hand at college, discovered the internet, crossed the Mississippi, saw the Rocky Mountains, 4 of the 5 Great Lakes, and many other wonders of God's Creation, got my heart ripped out of my chest Mortal Kombat style by a girl who was a walking parade of red flags but I was too young and dumb to see 
, saw many of my friends get married, and started the job where I still work, all in the 90's. And none of that feels very far away. And of course my co-worker made everything better when I mentioned having graduated in the early 90's by saying, "Wow, I wasn't even thought of yet." I replied, "I know. Shut up." 
I don't lament getting older. I'm very blessed; I'm in good health, and I feel good. But it was a sobering reminder that time is transitory. So treasure the days while they're here, because once they're in the rear view mirror, you don't get them back.May 25, 2024
