Background Practice
Simple background practice. I challenged myself to draw every blade of grass. What do you think I could do to make my forests more believable and/or realistic? Especially trees. Some advice on lighting may also be appreciated. Don't be too afraid of being "harsh"!Feb 20, 2021#forest

I would suggest adding a lot more texture to the trees. Most types of trees have rough bark, so adding various lines or small patches of darker and lighter areas on the trunk could help a lot. Reference photos are always a great tool to use!

•Your leaves on the trees feel more like clouds rather than bushy tree tops. If you started with a dark base then added more sparce highlights to the leaves it would help with depth and defining.
You need to decide where your light source is coming from. Once you identify which direction the light is coming from then you can think of what is bright and what is dark. If the light is coming from above middle in front then anything you'd be looking at in view would actually be shadowed. And everything on the other side of the trees are being illuminated.
My favorite part is the grass. It has nice feeling to it. I can actually see a small breeze blowing it slightly.
