I’m drawing your lives, Doctor! It’s time to talk about the American-produced Doctor Who TV movie from 1996, starring Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor! Funnily enough, it was his birthday a few days ago- so, on the very small chance you’re seeing this… happy birthday, Mr. McGann~

Unfortunately, I don’t know too much about the Eighth Doctor, as he didn’t get too much characterization in the movie. According to the official BBC website, he is an “effortlessly charming, romantic figure,” which is definitely the vibe I got. He was the first Doctor to be romantically involved with any of his companions (albeit briefly), something that would be repeated in NuWho with David Tennant~ The Eighth Doctor had a lot of enthusiasm & childlike excitement when talking about his homeworld, which was simply lovely to see! Unfortunately, none of his official set photos captured that personality very well. The set photos showed the Eighth Doctor as very stoic – looking like Alan Rickman. He even holds a pocketwatch that I don’t think he even HOLDS in the movie, huh? I went and picked a screenshot that I felt matched the character much better

The Eighth Doctor gets MUCH more characterization in the audio dramas produced by Big Finish since 2001. Alas, I haven’t listened to them, but I have heard clips and they sound really good already. I like to call the Eighth Doctor “The Audio Doctor,” since most of his stories are there. Don’t skip 9, and don’t forget 8!
