Jack & Pete: Character DesignsThrowback Thursday! This unique DTIYS challenge from Swazzle Puppet Studio is based off a pair of puppets. This piece was actually kind of a breakthrough for me. In studying character design, I've been struggling to understand the use of broad shapes to build bodies. No matter how many examples I saw, I couldn't quite break characters down into basic shapes on my own. It didn't make sense to me how Maleficent is a triangle, or Superman is a square. But it clicked here, when I broke down the photo of the original Jack and Pete puppets into shapes. I could see the triangles in Jack, and the circles in Pete. It make sense, finally. And I'm really proud of the result here! I decided to redesign the characters in a Saturday morning cartoon kind of style.
