Hey guys, a few red flags to look out for with scammers--
But first a common scam recently: if someone wants to commission you but can only pay by check, it's most likely a scam. They might ask where you're from or who you bank with as the scam can only work in certain countries.
Most common story: "Hi, I'd like to pay you to draw a birthday gift for my son.." or something similar. Look up "birthday gift son scam" to find threads about the scam among songwriters/how the scam works. I've received similar messages here and insta; so has my friend on Insta, almost verbatim. Neither of us have gone far enough to be scammed, but the almost verbatim requests from different accounts across platforms and different times of year is fishy enough. At the very least, even if you don't get scammed, it's a waste of time so hopefully this will save you some (unless you want to stay & have a fun convo with them
).

-They didn't like/heart any of your works
-Their account is new (check the comment below tho for more info)
-They ask where you're from
-You have a commission page up but they open with "do you do commission"
-They offer a price up front (Hi I'll pay you X amount to draw this)
-The comm request is vague or isn't very relevant to the work you have in your gallery
-They seem eager to get to paying you
Obviously, these aren't 100% indicators, but be careful. Feel free to drop other things to look out for in the comments and read what others have to say!Sep 29, 2022

Oof had a run in with this recently, I was already suspicious tho so when they got dodgy about payment I dropped the commission. (Also I lied about where I was from, lol- not doing that again) I’m just disappointed because I still haven’t gotten an actual commission! Stupid scam

I saw other post about it. It seems it's spreading more than I thought. This is why always have rules in your commission tab and act like npc that stick to these rules and vice versa. Stay safe everyone.

Omg thank you for this post! Idk if this is just Instagram or also here on artfol but I’d like to add that I’ve come across several of these that have gotten smart and filled their account with months of photos! And while they look like they aren’t new at all- almost every image can easily be sourced to google by looking up the basic subject.
I got a super convincing page that was asking for art of their pet for their kid and the page had probably more than 10 “pics of the two of them” each individually! (Luckily I don’t do pets at all so I smelled this scam a mile away
)
