RIP President Jimmy CarterDon't worry, this isn't a political channel - though I LOVE talking about Presidents. With that said, as some of you may know, former American President Jimmy Carter passed away in December at the age of 100~ At least he got to see the big 1-double-0, unlike Betty White. A humble peanut farmer, a great Christian, a humanitarian, Jimmy Carter is truly one of the most underrated Presidents of our time.
He fought for human rights while as President and for many years after, holding even our allies accountable for their abuses. His greatest accomplishments as President include the Camp David Accords, the first peace treaty involving a certain nation that has fallen from our good graces in recent years, his domestic energy program, his creation of the Departments of Energy and Education, and giving control of the Panama Canal to Panama! In fact, his policy initiative success rate was even higher than Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford, Reagan, and Bush's!
Carter spoke very frankly about the problems America faced in the late 1970s, and still continue to face today. He warned of the energy crisis, global warming, and the breakdown of the separation between church and state. He understood that a "crisis of confidence" had struck the American people, and would only cause greater problems later down the road. Unfortunately, he was not able to inspire that confidence. He told Americans what they needed to hear, not what they wanted to hear, while also having a poor press image and working relations with Congress. He worked hard, but had little success in communicating his plans to the American People. He ran as a Washington outsider, and as such, did not play into Washington political games. All these factors, especially the infamous Iran Hostage Crisis, played into the hands of electing the charismatic liar Ronald Reagan - one who inspired confidence while working against America's interests.
Like fellow one-term President John Quincy Adams, he had far greater success outside of the Presidency. As Governor of Georgia, he helped move Georgia away from its segregationist roots. After his Presidency, he turned his attention to humanitarian projects by establishing the Carter Center. He actively worked to help people in need, and eventually won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002!
Jimmy Carter was a man who practiced what he preached. Though he may have come off as a bit "too preachy" back in 1977, we now understand that he knew exactly what he was talking about. He refused to throw in the towel after his 1980 loss and continued to make the world safer for everyone, America and abroad. He was no man of pretty words, but he was a man of faith and a man of action. He's earned his rest.
