What do you guys think of NFTs? What are some pros and cons about it that formed your opinion?
I personally think the claim that it's bad for the environment isn't fully true. Some blockchains are enviromental friendly (using electricity generated from renewable energy) and others are not, you just have to know which one it is through research. The problem is with how electricity is generated to authenticate the NFTs, not the NFTs themselves.
It can, however, be quite expensive to "mint" your digital artwork for it to be an NFT. The authentication acquires you to pay so-called "gas fees", which varies across platforms, and if no one is going to buy your art anyway, you might lose money doing this. You have to have an audience first so that people want to buy your art.Apr 20, 2021

I personaly think it's just a pyramid scheme. It's not meant for small artists anyways and even if you invest you probably won't get any money (same concept as bitcoin, made for rich people to get richer ig). So imo I won't support NFTs

Even if something uses renewable energy, that doesn't make it harmless to the environment. The best thing to do for the environment is to reduce use of energy, and NFTs are a new and arguably unnecessary use of energy. Even if the computers run on solar or wind, the tools used to collect solar are made from non-renewable materials like plastic that are also difficult/expensive to recycle, and wind turbines harm wildlife. Crypto as a whole is also a pyramid scheme where 90% of the success is distributed amongst 10% of those involved, and everyone else loses money and time (I actually talked to an investing specialist about this).
NFTs (like most internet-based anything) are very difficult to regulate. People are authenticating art that doesn't belong to them to make a quick buck off it, and some artists (like me) are very uncomfortable with that, and there's virtually no way to stop people from doing it without browsing NFT auction sites ourselves and reporting stuff as copyright infringement. Artists don't have time to police our stuff; we are meant to create art with our time.
So I oppose it in any form and I don't want to feed into support of it. Any benefits of it stop at "an individual can make money" and for me, that's not good enough. There's too many negatives to the entire philosophy behind it and any pyramid scheme.

I don’t know that much about them but personally I am not going to invest in them, mostly bc unless ur a big artist/ have a large audience ur not really going to make those large sales that originally attracted everyone,,
Also referencing the environmental impact I heard somewhere that it causes the same effect as other crypto currency (but don’t quote me on this I could be 100% wrong LOL :p ) but yea I’m pretty neutral on the subject

Any electricity that comes from renewable sources and goes into NFTs is clean energy that could and should be going into more practical applications that have to resort to fossil fuels; electricity consumption is electricity consumption, period, think of it as NFTs leeching off of the clean energy others wish hey could use.
Additionally, NFTs are very frequently used to profit off of artists’ art without their consent, this is art theft.
Last but not least, it’s a pyramid scheme, most people end up losing money because as you said you have to pay upfront just for the opportunity to make money.
Opening commissions is a healthier, more stable, and safer way of getting support, and it isn’t responsible for ludicrous amounts of greenhouse gas emissions.

There are very very good articles in The Art Newpaper about NFTs and, especially, if you’re looking for advices from an artist who knows well the subject -> there’s an article titled « Jemery Deller mints his first NFT: here is his advice for other artists », an interview by Tom Seymour. The article is available for free.
I’m not into NFTs that much because I have hard times understanding the concept of authenticity and exclusivity in the digital domain
But maybe for your popular artworks, or for an atwork that goes viral etc. it’s good idea to turn them into NFTs
