In the myths, bolotianyk spends days napping in his stone castle at the bottom of the swamp. Once disturbed, he rises to the surface to lure the disturbers (mostly noisy drunks) under the water.
The most common way for water spirits to lure a victim is music - they use reedpipes to play a haunting melody that causes drunks to go deep into the swamp searching for its source. Another way for bolotianyk to get rid of annoying people is creating mirages of beautiful grassy hills in the deepest barts of the bog; drunks can't supress the urge to reach those hills to relax, so they drown on their way there.
