CLGN Pre-Scheme A
The first to what become the last true US cruiser and the very first nuclear propelled surface warship: USS Long Beach begun with humble beginnings of destroyer sized hull (Called DLGN or Nuclear "Frigate"). At first in the early-mid 1950's the USN wanted 3 kinds of Nuclear propelled vessels: A fleet escort eg a Destroyer, A major surface combatant eg a cruiser and a major strike unit eg a Carrier, but it was soon become evident that the size and weight of a Nuclear Power Plant would make the Destroyer unfeasible or to the very least uneconomical to build. This is evident in this Pre-Scheme A proposal which had basically the same armament as a Farragut class Guided Missile Destroyer but on a larger and much heavier hull!The designs had these characteristics:
