Back in the days deviantart didn't have status updates, only journals. You could set them up like blogs with themes and a lot of customization/coding. Meanwhile they overlap a lot with status updates but generally speaking, if you only want to make a quick update in Twitter style, use status updates and if you want to tell more, use journals.

Status updates are usually for short text posts.
Or at least that's how I used them back then, I would use journals to give out longer updates and the status one to give shorter and quick updates.
Though I could be wrong about these differences between the two.
