Ooh let’s stretch to a character I haven’t spoken about.
Motley is a blind security director, bodyguard, and bounty hunter.
It’s commonplace for freelancers/contractors to take up multiple positions within their areas of expertise in EB.
Motley has an extremely binary worldview (ehohe- like the motley pattern). He draws conclusions and always follows through with them.
However, I think he’d prefer if everyone was as simple as Hound. His.. hound. His seeing eye dog.
Unpredictability strikes him very suddenly. And more often than not, it is due to human error.
His hound does what it is asked, when it is told.
A little spoiler. But Motley is tasked with retrieving a beetle that keeps following Esther.
And he is bloody scary. Essentially a phantom that keeps showing up. As though he’s always approaching you at a walking pace only to let the hound chase you down.
Anyway, Esther does end up befriending the dog. And the idea that his own hound would disobey him just wrecks the man. His composure is gone and his life momentarily shatters. It was tough to write and I still go back even now to tinker with the dialogue.
