Ok so I think that drawing characters on their own is easy enough right. And also backgrounds on their own I can do. But HOW do you mesh them together I can’t do it for some reason?? It’s very difficult and the character always ends up looking super out of place

I like to do a filter of some sort over the background (like blur or noise etc) and mess with the color settings a bit to get them to match the character a bit more

I browsed your gallery and I don't see a problem - I think they match, in the end. It's tough to give advice on how to make an unknown process less difficult.
I can start character first and add background elements but not a complete background, or start with a very very very rough sketch of what goes where and redraw (draw over) that with more detail a few times before moving into the lineart stage.
Adding shadows, small interactions, how the environment affects the character and vice versa can help sink the character into the environment. Footprints, dirt, snow on shoulders. Any kind of touch in general. It could be holding something or smashing something to pieces, an expression like curiosity, exploring what's behind something, impacting the space in some way.

I don’t do characters with backgrounds but I do do objects with backgrounds and I always find starting with the background sketch and the doing the object sketch always helps me make things look like they belong together.
