What are your opinions on >> When does a person become "big enough" that people don't have to ask permission to write and publish fanfics of said person's stuff?

Say there is a well published author with a well known universe. Seems ok to write and publish a fanfic set in that universe. But say there's a writer with like 4 readers and one reader decides to write and publish a fanfic. That feels a little odd doesn't it, if it's without the small writer's permission? Somewhere between the two, there's an unspoken point where it seems to become okay and doesn't feel like stealing. xD What determines that iyo?

That's a really good question tho xD I find it hard to answer cause all the reasons that come up in my mind feel more like an opinion than a valid reason xD how did you figure it out for yourself now?

People still think that fanfic is stealing in this time and age? 🀨

I think that if the fanfic author claim that their fanfic is the original work then it is stealing. But if there is a disclaimer in the beginning, as it is the usual custom. People will know it is based on a different work from someone else.

And if a original work has only 4 or so readers I think it is highly unlikely that the fanfic will be more popular than it. People only go after fanfiction of a thing if they liked the original and want more of it.

Really, I never came across a fanfic were in the comment sections people were praising the fanfic's author for their 100% original ideia that they had themselves because either everybody there already knew the original or there was a disclaimer on the top saying who the original story and characters belonged to.

As for your actual question: I do not think there is a treshold of how many fans an original work has to have for there to be needed permission unless the author of the original is actively hunting down fanfictions of their work to ensure there aren't any.

Idk man but to me I feel that regardless how big they are, still ask for permission and give credit.

Maybe there are some real official laws about this. I guess it could be something like the copyright, where you can use somebody's work to rework it and repuropse it so that it does not detract attention or money from the original (or something on this line, I am not a lawyer I don't know exactly). If an artist is small, and you do a fanart, it's easy gettimore audience than them and therefore you become more influential on their work than themselves. If you make a fanar of a famous artwork, you will never equal its fame and guide its direction. In the middle I guess the distinction between allowed fub stuff or not can be determined by how much influence you have on the people's consumption of that art compared to the original

i think people feel more inclined to ask permission when they feel that the author may actually see what they made? or when an author gets to a point where they can’t possibly view every single piece of fanart or fanfic being made permission feels less required

I'd say that if someone wanted to write fanfics about a VERY well-known author's universe, I don't think it is "required" to ask permission from the original source since everybody would know where it's set at. People do that. But it's safer to make that disclaimer of who it belongs to anyways. But if someone writes a fanfic from a small author without asking their permission or crediting them, it would be unfair and it would be considered stealing. Because if the fanfic becomes more popular than the original work, the original author would receive nothing whatsoever and think that it was done the other way around. Not sure if that made sense.

Hmmm … basically if it’s more likely for people to have seen the original first?
And reaching the original creator isn’t really feasible?

Now that you mention it... damn this gotta be a new kind of philosophy XD.
I'd say it's "ok" to do when a popular person with a big audience, because people already know the original source.
Meanwhile when someone is small it's more easy for it to be "stolen"(?) and some people might think the person doing the fanfic is the original creator or that universe?
