Battleball Helmet

In recent months, violent crime in the city has been in steady decline. Whispers in the seedier elements spread rumors of a man wearing what appears to be modified Battleball gear and acting as a sort of vigilante, confronting criminals in places where police refuse to go. No one knows his name, nor does he yet bear any kind of alias, but he's quickly becoming something of a folk hero among the people...

My OC Antares Voronov lives within a world that is best described as a dieselpunk dystopia. His yet unnamed city in his yet unnamed world (I have a lot of work yet to do with all the background of this story ) in the Kasimir star system, is a highly industrialized world that is barely in the infancy of its space age. This is unfortunate, as one of the neighboring worlds in its star system - which has advanced into the age of interplanetary travel - has been occupying this planet, claiming its resources, and oppressing its people for a couple decades. It is the occupying aliens who mostly make up the governments and who police the cities. Most of them care very little what the people of this world do to each other, and therefore violent crime in certain places has gotten out of hand.

The people are quite resilient, however. Sports have become a very popular way to entertain and lift the spirits of the citizens. The most popular sport is called Battleball, and it is played in large arenas between teams of lightly armored competitors who try to advance a metal sphere into various goals of differing value. A large part of the game is the fouling system which allows points to be resolved via one-on-one combat. It's quite a violent sport, but largely remains civil, and its popularity is growing by leaps and bounds. Since the occupation, the sport has actually spread off-world, and is called by different names on different worlds, but its original name is Battleball.

Amongst players, Battleball armor is highly prized. Rookies must use the armor that they are given, which is often substandard, until they earn the right to build their own. Each veteran's armor is different, custom made within the sport's regulations, and suited to the individual's dimensions and strengths. It is vital to protect the player from high speed collisions from other players and from the ball itself.

Recently, the previously mentioned vigilante (suspected of being a current or former Battleball player) has been taking down violent criminals wearing what appears to be Battleball armor modified beyond the specifications of the game...
