This drawing shows the United States Navy Baltimore class Heavy Cruiser USS Macon in 1960/61The drawing shows the USS Macon CA-132 one of the last batch of the Baltimore class heavy cruisers in her early 1960's state after the removal of the Regulus I missiles and associated launcher equipment but rest of the Class Improvement Project changes still on like the 3"/50 RF AA guns and radars.
The last 6 units of the Baltimores had a slightly different hull with slightly modified superstructures and AA layout. The stern was more round with only a single crane, originally 2 twin Bofors guns were located there and the Oerlikons were mounted in twin mounts rather in singles.
The CIP or Class Improvement Project was a series of Refits of the early 1950's for the major fighting units of the United States Navy though not all classes an not all individual ships received it. The Project included the replacement of the quad 40mm Bofors guns with twin 3"/50 RF Mark 22 guns on a 1:1 basis but due to the new guns being heavier this was not the case in most ships. Also included in the project are the removal of the 20mm Oerlikon guns or replace two singles by a single twin to reduce the crew requirements of the ships, other changes included enclosed bridge structures and updated radar sets.
In case of the Baltimores of the 14 built units only 9 ships received the update.
