The Woman KingMy fanart for the Woman King staring Viola Davis as Nanisca, the leader of a royal guard of all female warriors who protected their homeland of Dahomey in Africa during the 1800s otherwise known now as modern day Benin.
This film directed by Gina Prince- Bythewood has been marred with controversy over the depiction of the historically real life Agojie warriors who were slavers of their own people and profited immensely from the slave trade. The film addresses this fact but romanticises them as heroic liberators more so than the catalysts of oppressive exploitation that they were.
Another powerhouse performance from Viola and John Boyega who steals every scene he's in.. Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch as Nawi and Izogie respectively provide the heart and soul of the film with their student, mentor dynamic. Overall a beautifully melodramatic homage to African heritage all though I did have some issues with the contrived storytelling and some dodgy accentsJan 24, 2023
