M3gan fanart completedFor Cady, losing both her parents in a fatal vehicle collision was the most devastating experience of her life. After being fostered by her aunt it is soon clear that she is in the hands of someone who completely lacks any parental skills, however over compensates for this with her genius level intelligence as a robotics engineer. With the help of her peers and the resources of a billion dollar toy corporation she creates M3gan the ultimate artificially intelligent living doll with an eclectic skill set and ability to create a seemingly genuine bond with it's primary owner. All seems well for Cady as her new friend starts to almost fill the void of losing her parents however things begin to go awry as Megan's autonomous programme starts to develop a sentient awareness of its own and will stop at nothing to protect Cady and take back its own free will no matter what the cost may be.
At first impression from the marketing of the film you would think it was just another B-movie slasher Chucky rip off with the over used trope of Ai turning against it's creator. The reality is this film far exceeds those expectations telling a legitimately emotional story highlighted by fantastic performances from Allison Williams and Violet Mcgraw. It challenges the audience to contemplate philosophical questions as well as real world social psychology such as attachment theories in the early stages of human development and the theme of parents relying more and more on technology to raise their children. At what point have we gone too far when we allow it to substitute real human connection?
Easily one of my favourite films of the year so far as it managed to subvert my expectations and I really cared about Cady and sympathised with her story. This film balances drama, humour and horror successfully which is extremely difficult to do although some of the humour can be attributed to a seemingly random dance sequence which became a viral tiktok sensation and a movie studio's marketing dream making this one of Blumhouses most profitable films to dateMay 26, 2023
