Smilodon populator

What's your favourite prehistoric creature and why?
One of my favorites ones has always been the Smilodon or "saber tooth cat". For a long time it was a quite controversial animal, with scientists who argued that its teeth were too large and did not allow it to open its mouth wide, or that its jaw was extremely weak and could not bite forcefully, or that its fangs were so fragile that it could not have used them for hunting and they were only an ornament. But an old finding by the Argentine Paleontologist José Bonaparte (whom I had the privilege of meeting in person) and recent studies (Chimento et al., 2019) of fossil remains of Smilodon with wounds on their skulls, show without a doubt that indeed these animals were perfectly capable of using their enormous fangs, which, far from being fragile ornaments, were resistant and efficient tools capable of piercing even the bone of their prey and opponents.
Evolution has spawned many different "saber-toothed" animals throughout Earth's history, all very different, but just as strange. And I think it is already well known that the rarer an animal is, the more I like it. But what makes the Smilodon populator one of my favorites is that a couple of statues of this species guard the entrance to the La Plata Science Museum (which is like a second home to me), welcoming the arriving visitors. I have visited that museum frequently for as long as I can remember, and the image of the Smilodons upon entering has accompanied me all my life.

¿Cuál es tu criatura prehistórica favorita, y por qué?
Uno de mis preferidos siempre fue el #Smilodon o "tigre dientes de sable". Durante mucho tiempo fue un animal bastante controversial, habiendo científicos que argumentaban que sus dientes eran demasiado grandes y no le permitían abrir bien la boca, o que su mandíbula era sumamente débil y no podía morder con fuerza, o que sus colmillos eran tan frágiles que no podría haberlos usado para cazar y sólo eran un adorno. Pero un viejo hallazgo del Paleontólogo argentino José Bonaparte (a quien tuve el privilegio de conocer en persona) y estudios recientes (Chimento et al., 2019) de restos fósiles de Smilodon con heridas en sus cráneos, demuestran sin lugar a dudas que efectivamente estos animales eran perfectamente capaces de utilizar sus enormes colmillos, los cuales, lejos de ser frágiles adornos, eran resistentes y eficientes herramientas capaces de perforar incluso el hueso de sus presas y contrincantes.
La Evolución ha generado muchos animales diferentes con "dientes de sable" a largo de la historia de la Tierra, todos muy distintos, pero igual de extraños. Y creo que ya es bien sabido que mientras más raro es un animal, más me gusta. Pero lo que convierte al Smilodon populator en uno de mis favoritos es que un par de estatuas de esta especie guardan la entrada del @museodelaplata (que es para mí como un segundo hogar), dándole la bienvenida a los visitantes al llegar. Visito ese museo con frecuencia desde que tengo memoria, y la imagen de los Smilodon al entrar me acompañó toda mi vida.
