2024 vs 2020
Redraw of the first(?) "fully rendered" drawing I did of Kai, back in 2020also just have to make my round drawing more of my ocs in digital xD who should I do next, Sawyer?
I don’t like this that much but don’t hate it either.. I just don’t think it really shows that much improvement but might be bc i chose to do it in digital and I’m still a beginner at that.
Spent so much time on it and started like four other things in the middle and worked on and off on all of them simultaneously (some of them are connected like a mini-comic and I jumped back and forth between canvases a lot), occasionally going back to this one – I struggled so much with the anatomy and the pose.. even with refs and i started tracing some of it but then scrapped most of that and started doing something else/changed the angle of his face/head slightly and kind of didn’t like how his face is shown less but also I just preferred to have his head a bit tilted back instead of the front-facing I did in the old one,, but then had to trace some parts again bc it just did not look good so like his hand is a combination of two or three hand poses i found on pinterest (think i messed up his fingers, confused some of the refs i think like what was supposed to be my ref for the index turned into the ring finger etc. Think actually it was mostly when i did the colours i messed up) also ended up using an older drawing I did of Ant to get the head angle right.
So it just took a lot of time, have soo many dif sketches and lineart layers bc i just duplicated them and erased and redrew certain parts, duplicated that and repeat until I was somewhat happy with the result. But think I like how it looks? Except his shirt, especially the folds on his shoulder… why are clothes so hard to draw :(
Ended up not doing that much with rendering mostly bc i just wanted it to be done even if rendering is some of the more fun parts, so just simple shading that I didn’t blend, but put a linear fill thing on top tho
Also not every single drawing has to be fully rendered or masterpieces, sometimes i gotta remind myself of that and allow myself to just say something’s done when I don’t feel like working on it anymore without feeling guilty about it, also allow myself to make some more ‘bad’ art
Anyway, for the old one, I remember how markers did not work well on that paper (don’t ask me why i ever used markers in that sketchbook at all..) but the anatomy as well, I don’t think i thought it bad back then and I think I did it without reference so was just proud of that but now it looks weird to me? so I think at least the pose is a bit better now but at the same time I don’t think it shows that much improvement here honestly so idk if I like the redraw or not ¯\(ツ)/¯ I just think it looks ok tbh

Yeah, I think there definitely is improvement in the anatomy and naturalness of the pose! Maybe the struggle makes it hard for you to see bc you went through it xD but for us, it's very clear. Also his expression/personality developed. It makes sense that it may have been difficult to show the improvement bc it's digital vs your normal medium, but that alone shows you've learned smth new since then, which is a good thing whether it was digital or something else!
