Can anyone explain to me how to place a portrait on the paper/canvas so it looks compositionally right? Mine are always either off-center, too high/low, have too much free space or no space at all. I truly suck at composition and tutorials don't help :/Jun 5, 2022

Using a slightly bigger format than you want the final piece to be, draw and then with two L shaped paper pieces you can take a look which composition would look nice. After that trim it like that or expand the background to fit.
Would be one way of handling it ^-^

•I usually draw a digital mockup of the sketch, then eyeball/trace it onto the paper if I plan to go digital with it x'D
alternatively, I thumbnail out the composition on my sketchbook, take a pic with my phone, maybe place a transparent 3x3 grid over it, and then eyeball it from there

•im not really sure :,) but i do always make a rough line where the top, bottom and sides of the head will be before i start sketching/painting to make sure the head will fit at least! make sure to not forget about the hair with this haha :) other than that im not sure tho sadly!
