The Shallowing RiteWomen of Garrock give birth in the shallows, often accompanied by a young shaman, and if they so choose, their close female companions or family. Men are typically not allowed to be present.

The reason for this tradition is simple: sailors are superstitious. A child born where waves touch them is considered “marked by the sea.” Such children are believed to never drown, and to always find their way home, not matter the distance of their journey.
The shaman is there to read the child's fate: the first wave that touches the newborn is of most importance.

Calm ripples indicate a steady life, whereas a strong wave may mean a powerful destiny. If the tide pulls away, it often indicates a curse. On the contrary, if the water seems to grow in depth, it tells the child is favored by the sea.
One extraordinary occurence would be a child born during a storm.
