Before he was the Bringer of Darkness, the King of the Underworld. As a member of the lowest caste of angels, Noctifer fought a tyrannical regime to free himself and his fellows from oppression, only to realize that he’d become an accessory to a brand new corrupt order. The remaining angels flocked to this celestial, this Archangel, who was just as instrumental in their freedom as Noctifer. Except Noctifer was expected to fall in line and accept His Rule. He refused. Instead of living under a new system, a new hierarchy, he cast himself down into the shadowy recesses of the Underworld, that place where human souls gathered when they died. He expected to die. Instead, he became…something else.
It's a story the newer generations of angels won't tell you, because they aren't aware it even happened. To them, Noctifer is just the adversary, the ontological evil opposing their supreme deity, The Archangel. And The Archangel isn’t about to correct the record, not if it suits Him. Besides, it lets Him live free of guilt. Such feelings are unbecoming of a King. The Archangel did nothing wrong. Noctifer just forgot his place. He brought ruin upon himself. The Archangel did nothing wrong. Right?
My eternally tortured old men
unfortunately love did not win this time. The Archangel did lowkey yearn for Noctifer but didn't view him as an equal. Noctifer's rejection of Him was infuriating. This is delving into some new lore but the Overworld (home of angels and “worthy” human souls) is a very homophobic place and it is precisely because The Archangel is pissed that He couldn't sway Noctifer to stay with Him, even if their dynamic wasn't explicitly romantic. He wants to limit anyone from possibly attaining what He could not.
