Nick Bottom - SketchbookI went through my old sketchbook for this and decided to post one of my favourite pages. This was me practising how to draw Nick Bottom from the musical Something Rotten, so that I could make an animatic of one of the songs. I have like half of the storyboard, but never made the actual animatic

As always when I try to draw a new person (especially a real, non-animated one), the first attempt looks h o r r i b l e. He looks absolutely lifeless lmao. But that first awful sketch is needed to get to the better ones! I always try to first look at the person closely and put their features on paper as I see them, and once I've gotten a feel for that I simplify and exaggerate to make them look more alive and give them some personality.
Simplifying is also very important for making animatics, since you need to draw the same character over and over again! Obviously this design would need to be simplified some more though, the clothes in particular. But I wanted to really understand them before simplifying them even more later :)
My favourite part of this page are probably the expressions. I really outdid myself with those and I still love looking at them
