My character design tropesA very half-assed sketch but it was just to show the features I usually add when making characters so I didn’t feel like doing lineart and stuff…
Chose to draw a guy bc I tend to draw guys more, idk why but girls are hard to draw sometimes
EYES:
So I tend to draw all eyes the same when it comes to the shape, the only difference might be the size but that usually only depends on the age (bigger eyes for younger kids etc.) I might change the lashes a bit depending on the gender too but for the most part I draw eyes the same for every person I draw ever, except the colour ofc. Usually I draw the same eyebrows too, I just give male ocs thicker and female ocs more slanted or slimmer brows. But to give some character I sometimes give them very thick brows or something
NOSE, CHEEKS, CHIN:
And I guess it’s just my style to draw big, mostly round noses, and chubby cheeks but I guess you can say it’s a character design I use a lot too (but mostly it’s just how I draw faces in general) I usually draw wide chins sometimes more rounded but the style I draw the most is more square-ish and big idk
And sometimes I vary the bump on the nose bridge but most noses I draw look the same too?
EARS:
Again it’s just my style or default to draw kinda big and round ears, so I try to give new characters differently shaped ears but in most cases they’re gonna be more round or like a } kinda shape.
I’ve been giving more and more of my characters piercings the later years, mostly in the ears, bc they’re fun to draw and give some character I think but I didn’t draw any here.
I actually don’t have any piercings myself, not even in the ears (pr random but I had a dream last night I got my ears pierced but they were fake piercings, and the person helping me used a snake to bite my ears in order for the piercings to stick.. it was really weird)
HAIR:
I love to draw messy hair, usually it’s a half-long hairstyle with bangs, but I try to give some characters undercuts or shorter hair to change it up, and I actually love drawing curls too but in most cases I draw straight hair. And something I always draw (unless the hair is a longer style) are antennas but I change the shape or direction and stuff depending on the oc (ex. Ant has a smaller and a bigger one, idk how to explain..)
COLOUR PALETTE:
So for hair and eye colours my default is to give them ginger or brown hair combined with either brown or green eyes, and in most cases freckles too. I sometimes give my characters blushes but depends on their personality. I also like giving them moles or something
I’m a ginger with hazel eyes and freckles myself so that’s why I draw that alot
OTHER FEATURES:
I also like giving characters scars for no reason, and then try and come up with a backstory for it later lol
And if they’re not supposed to be human I love giving them pointy ears and fangs
CLOTHES:
I usually dress my characters the same before developing them or the setting they’re in. Usually I give them a T-shirt or hoodie with jeans
So for my ocs to look different, the things I try to vary most are the nose, chin and hair, and sometimes brows and of course the colour palette. Also their built but I’m a bit too used to drawing one specific body type whoops
