Old ArtworkWe all start somewhere, and this is the beginnings of brainstorming for my work-in-progress story, Emily's Tail! Top Left: One of the very first concept sketches. Her working name was Sierra, her hair was red, and she was visiting a town built on docks in the middle of the ocean for safety and seclusion while those helping her planned out a next step. She is crying because the loss of her previous life has finnaly become tangible and real. I was really proud of this background and I sort of still am! Bottom Left: Realized almost immediately that I didn't want the wings to disappear or for there to be a transformation between human and part dragon. I wanted there to be only the one, very expensive, transformation and after that she was completely half dragon. No form changing. My first attempt at wings was a great when I first made it, but the wing sails which fell like cloth weren't going to work and would quickly be changed. The realization that she couldn't wear the same clothes as humans without major modifications started to sink in at this point. Top Right: A major design overhaul and a different pallete along with a restructure of the story and now we have the same character but not. Now she's named Emily and has strong blue as her main color instead of red. At this point I began to start designing clothing that would make sense with the non-human anatomy and dresses became a prime choice for their simplicity in fitting on the body. Makes it very clear where all the cut-outs should go! Bottom Right: Here we have a more moody, and technically nude-y piece. Her wing sails convienetly attach to her hail below the booty line, and at this point I really began to settle into the idea of having believable wings. One of my major gripes in fantasy was body-to-wing ratios which were such a far cry from flighted birds and bats that I sometimes would get pulled from my suspension of disbelief. This is due in part to researching animal flight for a long time and what it would take to make a human fly. Any story that tells of flighted people will depend on some suspention of disbelief, including this one, but some characters have flown on laughably tiny wings! This was the point where I began to realize that people with inhuman bodies would not only wear inhuman clothing but also build houses and furniture which catered to their specific needs. I was especially concerned with the process of sitting in various different chair and how that might all work! So this was a really fun trip down memory lane and a peek into my design process for Emily's Tail. Maybe one day when I make it big and I have thousands of people who just adore the story, they'll come to this page and eat up the little bits of how the story began and changed in it's early stages! Haha, one can dream, right? I hope it was a fun read, anyway! Thanks for checking my art out!! Zephyra AnimationsMay 24, 2021
