Day Out DowntownChristina and Emily, heading out to have lunch and window shop! I like the idea of this one, but in execution I struggled a lot, so I decided to open this to critique. My strength is character art, and while I think I could have maybe spent more time on the girls, the point of this one was to really practice perspective. Originally I made the background in detail, realized if I really wanted to focus to be the girls I should literally focus on the girls, and threw a bunch of Gaussian blur in to try and push you towards seeing them more. I was so tired that is wasn't a hard decision at the time, but I did a lot of work that you can't see anymore. Like the drawing of my gecko is a mural in the garage behind Christina. I tried a lot of newer ideas in this one. I tried a shading method that I could use in my future comic, because it's complex enough to look nice and simple enough to do 100s of times and not completely lose my mind. I just feel that for the mood I want my comic to have, lighting and shading is going to be a requirement. Also, I think lighting and shading in comics goes a long way towards making it feel more polished and professional. What do you think? Anyway the perspective and the background is my major struggle here. I originally planned to add people in the background, but gave up on that when I decided to blur it. I used the same lighting throughout all of the layers to try and unify the scene and that did work, but it still feels a little out of place to me. I appreciate any advice or criticism you can give me for this painting! In order to get good at backgrounds, I have to draw more backgrounds! So, here I am, doing my best to practice!!
