What's a song you wildly misunderstood the contents of?
When I was younger I didn't know that "hit the road" is a way of saying "go away", so when I first encountered the song "Hit the Road, Jack" I understood it as "Hit the Road-Jack", as in a homeless man named Jack who lives on the road, and always wondered why people were being so mean and assaulting him
I didn't know the rest of the lyrics, just that titleJun 2, 2024

Love how my first thought was cake by the ocean and lo and behold half of the comments are in the same boat

Animals by Maroon 5. I loved this song as a real little kid.....but unlike the title suggests this song is NOT about animals

•Death of a bachelor
I was a very literal child. I thought they were like, sacrificing a bachelor

•I thought cake by the ocean was about desserts. i thought the song house of fun by madness was just about kids being silly. i was grossly horribly wrong for both

I thought the guy in "Breakeven" by the Script was actually in jail for an embarrassingly long time, before it finally occurred to me that "I got time while she got freedom" might be metaphorical.
The guitar at the end also kind of sounds like a police siren to me and I thought that it was the police coming to get him

Pompeii…
I genuinely thought the lyrics were “and the WOLVES kept tumbling down in the city that we loved…”
Me sitting there imagining wolves that just can’t keep their balance falling down hills Jack and Jill style.

•Poker Face. For the longest time I thought it was actually about poker
. I don't like the original much so I never questioned it until I found a heavy metal version of it that I like. I googled the lyrics and was quite surprised

•Idk if this counts but finding out the popular “hayloft” song by mother mother technically is a sex song (?).
Like what do you mean it was about how a dad was trying to kill his daughter’s lover because he found out they were getting 𝓯𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓴𝔂 on a hayloft?!?!?
